Lalibela, Ethiopia, East Africa

These 11 amazing rock hewn "churches" are claimed to have been cut into the bed rock in the 13th century by a bunch of monks, who wanted to create "a new jerusalem". But the amount of rock removed, and the technological accuracy of the work, absolutely Could Not have been done by a bunch of sandle wearing monks. This site is very vaguely known, but rivals Petra, Jordan in its complexity and grandeur. I am convinced that both Petra, and Laliblela, were stumbled upon by later cultures, thousands of years after being built. Laliblela has Swastikas as well as Crosses carved into the rock. Legends say people were working on the construction during the day and the angels at night.
